Smith located the business centrally in Columbia City, purchasing the Simon J. Peabody estate in 1935, C.S. Smith was then joined by his sons, Stuart D. Smith and Boyce B. Smith in 1961, C. Taron "Terry" Smith joined his father and uncle to continue the family business. Taron W. Smith, sixth generation funeral director, worked for the family business from 1984 until 1991. In 1994 Scott A. Smith completed his licensing and is a sixth generation Funeral Director for Smith & Sons. In 1999 Gene S. Smith joined the family business, completing his licensing in 2006.
